In Turkey, a new era begun after Justice and Development Party’s third election victory in 2011. But in the shade of so called Arabian Spring, not only politicians, but also people in general have grown more divided by the pro-Islamist ideology. Ankara bombing which was ended hundred people’s life has revealed the deep divisions in Turkish society.
Social and religious dynamics are crucial to understand political life and huge change in Turkey
Fevzi Bilgin is founding president of Rethink Institute, a research organization based in Washington, DC. His areas of expertise are constitutional politics, Islam and politics, and Turkish politics. He received BA from Ankara University and PhD in political science from University of Pittsburgh. He previously taught political science in Turkey and the United States. His publications include recent books, Understanding Turkey’s Kurdish Questionand Political Liberalism in Muslim Societies.
